The Legacy
Rooted in Teotitlán. Woven for the world.
A Lineage of Masters
As one of the most prominent Zapotec women weavers of her generation, Aurora Bazán's story is inextricably tied to the ancient stones and living traditions of Teotitlán del Valle. Her loom is not just an instrument of creation; it is a continuation of an ancestral dialogue.
For decades, Aurora has stood as a pillar of community leadership. In a region where art and daily survival are intimately woven together, she has advocated for the empowerment of Oaxaca indigenous artists, defending fair trade and the preservation of authentic techniques against industrial dilution.
Her political and social labor extends to alternative economies within her community, notably participating in the use of the Túmin—a communal currency designed to foster local independence, barter, and solidarity among artisans and farmers. This commitment to communal sovereignty reflects the very essence of her art: sustainable, defiant, and profoundly human.
